Year 6

Welcome to Year 6 - Mr Edwards

Week Commencing: Monday 7th September - Friday 11th September

World at War

English

This week we began our writing based around the book 'Rose Blanche' by Ian McEwan. The story  follows a young German girl, Rose, who notices a boy escaping from a truck before being captured and forced back inside. Curious, she follows the truck and discovers a hidden concentration camp filled with starving children.

As the war continues, Rose secretly brings food to the prisoners, even while conditions in her own town worsen. Eventually, fighting reaches the area, and Rose is tragically killed during the chaos of the war. The story ends with spring returning, symbolising hope and renewal despite the horrors that have occurred.

We have also explored grammatical features such as colons, semi-colons and parenthesis and how we can incorporate them in our writing.

On Friday, we completed a quick dictation of our new spelling words and patterns for the week.

Next week, the children will be planning their own diary entry based on the book.

Maths

This week we have looked at place value and numbers up to and beyond a million. We used concrete resources to explore reading and writing numbers, partitioning numbers and placing them on a number line.

History

After a successful couple of immersion days last week, we completed our history topic. We learnt about the impact of war both on the home front and abroad, assessing how Britain and the other countries dealt with the terrible conflict.

PE

For the first unit of PE, we are focussing on football. This week we developed our dribbling skills, learning how to attack spacing whilst maintaining possession and how and when we chose to run with/or dribble the ball.

Guided Reading

This half-term, we are focussing on the novel 'Goodnight Mister Tom'. Children have had the opportunity to read aloud, read in pairs and be read to, to explore the themes and gain a deeper understanding of the text.
